Eight signs of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
 

Here is a short list of ADD symptoms (loosely adapted from the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistics Manual, or DSM-IV.) As you read this list, make a note of items that seem to be true about you. Take a moment to reflect your personal experiences, and why ADD makes it makes it difficult for you to succeed at school, work and home.


1. Poor concentration. You’re like a light switch. You’re turned off whenever something is boring, too complicated, or hard to understand. You just don’t have enough “juice” to focus and stay on track.


2. Distraction. You’re easily distracted. Your brain “turns off” when things are boring, too complicated, or hard to understand. You look for ways to “turn on” your brain power. You may drink coffee, soda or energy drinks to get yourself up and ready for action. You’re a thrill seeker or adrenaline junkie— this gives you an extra push that’s necessary to focus. Over-focus can also be a problem, causing you to dwell on things (rather than letting go and moving on.)

3. Disorganization. Your work space is scattered and messy. You’re a “pack rat” who doesn’t like to get rid of anything. You lose or misplace things, and feel overwhelmed. Getting organized is a big chore, so you tend to put things off. It’s easy to get behind when you don’t have your act together.

4. Restlessness.  You have a low tolerance for boredom. Waiting in line is pure torture. If you’re listening to a boring lecture, you feel compelled to get up and leave. Part of the problem is that you have nervous energy. It is a restlessness that makes it hard for you to relax. Sometimes, your mind “loops”— going over the same things repeatedly. Other times, your mind chatters or races, distracting you from getting things done. Restlessness is also evident when you can’t sit still, and you’re tapping your fingers or feet. At night, if you have a lot of your mind, you’re likely to be wound up, wired and wide awake.

5. Impulsiveness. You blurt out whatever comes to mind, without thinking first. Sometimes, you do or say things that you later regret. Your impulsiveness may also be evident when you’re driving. You may drive too fast, run stop signs or red lights, or get angry with other drivers. At work, you might quit or give up because of minor conflicts or frustration. In personal relationships, you might end things suddenly or make impulsive commitments. Sometimes, impulsiveness makes reading difficult. You give up easily, because the material is complicated, hard to understand, or doesn’t get to the point immediately.

6. Poor short-term memory. You have good insights—but sometimes, your thoughts race by so fast that you can’t make sense of them. You enter into a room to get something, and then immediately forget what it was. The problem is that you’re losing track of what you were thinking about, because you can’t hold onto your thoughts long enough. This is a short term memory problem. Another problem is reading something, and then immediately forgetting what you’ve just read. It’s like not having enough  RAM (Random Access Memory) in your computer. If you don’t have enough RAM, your computer may run super slow, give you error messages, or shut down. The same thing happens with your brain when you have a poor short-term memory.

7. Dissatisfaction & frustration. You start lots of projects but finish few of them. You might to be performing below your ability. Or perhaps you’re employed below your ability. You do a mediocre job when you’re capable of much more. It all adds up to frustration and disillusionment with life. You’d like to accomplish more in life, but you’re not sure how to make things happen. It’s frustrating when there is a huge gap between where you are, and where you want to be.

8. Emotionally wounded. The harder you try, the worse things get. You feel like giving up. ADD is emotionally draining and overwhelming.
